CIHEAM BARI's
DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION

Starting in the early 2000s, CIHEAM Bari has expanded its core mission of post-graduate higher education and research to include development cooperation.
By turning knowledge into action, CIHEAM Bari has implemented hundreds of both bilateral and multilateral initiatives in more than 25 countries. In line with the UN 2030 Agenda and backed by technical expertise, CIHEAM Bari aims to strengthen the resilience of rural and coastal communities and promote sustainable food systems through a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach.

Modus operandi

CIHEAM Bari's distinctive modus operandi in development cooperation is geared onto:
Identification of needs and 
co-design with the local communities
Application of a “programme logic” model setting out a causal pathway
Blended approach with research and education
Enhancement of Italy-wide system know-how
Respect for local development processes and socio-economic peculiarities of the target areas
Involvement of regional and/or thematic networks (IORA, ASEAN, PHARA, Arab Water Council)
Involvement of more than 10,000 CIHEAM Bari alumni through the Alumni Network

CIHEAM Bari's Thematic areas

The initiatives implemented by CIHEAM Bari intend to promote capacity building, cooperative research, institutional strengthening, technical assistance, creation and strengthening of supply chains, establishment of small infrastructure and facilities for sustainable agriculture and small-scale fishing. CIHEAM Bari's thematic areas in the field of cooperation are as follows:

CIHEAM Bari’s project work is also funded by development cooperation agencies from European countries, multilateral development banks, UN agencies and international trust funds.

CIHEAM Bari relies on multicultural and multilingual human resources. International cooperation requires increasingly skilled experts with a solid background, social skills and adaptability. For this reason, CIHEAM Bari’s cooperation activities are carried out by both permanent staff and consultants, the latter included in a roster to ensure flexibility and better match a problem-solving approach.
