25 years ago Egypt joined CIHEAM. About the SAMSIMIFA Project

25 years ago, in May 1996 Egypt joined the CIHEAM as Member State. Since then, CIHEAM activities in and for Egypt have been constantly increasing and new future initiatives are being built together.

In the last few weeks, over 25,000 small farmers of Minya and Fayum cooperatives have started to use in their fields the new machines purchased by the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation [MARL] within SAMSIMIFA. This is a project for sustainable mechanization, financed with a 10m€ aid credit by the Italian Cooperation and implemented by CIHEAM Bari in rural areas of upper Egypt.

SAMSIMIFA has strengthened the endowments of 14 Ministry farm machinery hiring centers and 2 applied research stations in the areas of Minya and Fayoum. The main technologies acquired through international tenders according to European procedures include 63 tractors, 4 combines for harvesting wheat and corn, 280 operating machines for soil preparation, land leveling, sowing and cultivation, treatments and harvesting for silage maize, sugar beet, potatoes, 36 binders for wheat harvesting and 11 threshers.

In upper Egypt, the Nile valley is characterised by numerous small farms with an area that in 90% of cases does not exceed 2.5 feddan [fed] (about one hectare [ha]); under these conditions harvesting can be done only by hand. The availability of these small and practical reaper-binders optimises harvesting times, increases grain quality, reduces costs and decreases the fatigue of working in the fields, thus increasing the time available for other activities, study, or family.

After manual harvesting, sheaves need threshing for grain seed separation; this operation is carried out mainly by machine; however, the lack of this technology, or the availability of obsolete equipment leads to a reduction in the quality and quantity of wheat grains selected for delivery. The use of the reaper-binder also improves the threshing process by preparing sheaves of equal size and already tied with a string. Moreover, the new threshers (made in Egypt) increase the separation efficiency compared to the previous generation machines. Finally, the tractor that drives the threshing machine has an engine that uses less power and releases fewer CO2 emissions compared to the tractors typically used for this operation.

Minya and Fayoum contribute to 12.7% of the Egyptian sugar beet production, by cultivating 12% of the total national area under this crop. Mechanized harvesting with beet hauling, beet digger and beet loader optimises harvesting and transport times, reduces waste, improves the cleanliness of the crop delivered to the sugar factory, while preserving the extractable sugar content. This ensures higher income for producers.

For small farms of beneficiary cooperatives, mechanised beet harvesting has been introduced using three-row diggers; this facilitates the heaviest part of the harvest, while leaving extensive labour requirements, and avoids the need for more complex technologies, which are expensive to operate and maintain and inefficient for small plots of land.

After the arrival of new machines, a cycle of practical trainings was carried out on site for Egyptian technicians, operators and drivers of Hiring Services Station and beneficiary Agriculture Cooperative of Minya and Fayoum. Italian and Egyptian trainers showed the innovative technologies and highlighted how to operate the machines in safety, as well as how to carry out the periodic maintenance work necessary to extend the life of the machines and make maximum use of them.

Sixth video | Trainin on-job pneumatic seed drill

 

Pneumatic planter is important innovation for Upper Egypt’s farmers, the SAMSIMIFA project organized on-job training sessions for technicians of the Hiring Services Stations of MALR in Minya and Fayoum to show how to operate with the planter in safety and how to adapt the same machine to suit the seeds of different crops and varieties, rows number and distances to control the density of the seeds. Machine precision and flexibility increase input use efficiency and allow to utilize this machine all year round for planting: corn, sugar beet, cotton, soybean, peanuts seeds.
