Capacity building of agricultural services for Supporting Horticultural sector development in selected woredas - SupHort Project

The overall objective of this project is to contribute to agricultural growth in Ethiopia in line with the Growth and Transformation Plan, increasing farms productivity and commercialization in horticultural sector. Specific objective is to strengthen capacities of territorial agricultural services to improve horticultural farms productivity and market linkages in selected woredas.

Expected results of this project are:

  • Territorial institutions delivering agricultural development services have enhanced staff and increased assets for playing a supportive role in the local horticultural sector development,
  • Territorial research and extension services work jointly with farmers for horticultural technologies development and improvement of local knowledge,
  • Territorial institutions support small scale irrigation scheme (SSIS) development,
  • Territorial institutions support farmers’ linkages to markets for horticultural sector development,
  • Territorial institutions manage GIS processes for horticultural development planning at the woreda level.

The Country and areas of intervention involved in this project are: Ethiopia, Amhara (Mecha and Fageta woredas) and Oromyia Regions (Walmara/Holeta and Toke Kutaye/Guder woredas).

Component 1 - Development of territorial institutional staff and assets in horticultural sector

Training

n. 4 master students in Ethiopia
n. 3 master students at IAMB
n. 5 Et officers trained at IAMB
n. 7 Et staff participated to certificate training in Et
n. 14 training at woreda level attended by 274 people
Study tours:  n. 1 in It; plus 4 study tour in Et (135 people)
Participation to events: 5 people sponsored


Operativity

Informatic technologies: computers, printers, desks, chairs, etc.
n. 8 Motor bikes and 60 bicycles to woredas authorities
Vehicles: 3 pickup and 1 land cruiser
 
 

Farmer training centers strengthened (8 has):

- created access to water (hand dug well, drilled well, water flow diversion, pond construction);
- installed irrigation technologies (pumps, drip irrigation, etc)
- fenced cultivated areas
- started demo activities in horticulture (vegetables and fruits)
 

Component 2 – Farmer Groups for horticultural technologies development

Implemented 76 farmer groups (15-20 members each), totally around 1350 farmers
Framer trainings:  64 trainings attended by around 1350 farmers
Implemented around 350 trials for a tot surface of around 22 ha
Crops: onion, potato, tomato, garlic, cabbage, pepper, carrot, cauliflower, tropical fruit trees, temperate fruit trees
Built n. 13 DLS for potatoes and onions
Field days: implemented 3 field days , around 300 people
   
 
 

Component 3 - Upgrading di SSISs

Almost completed n. 4 SSISs (around 1100 families, 7-8000 people), in total 300 ha
Interventions:  construction/strengthening/rihabilitation of dams and cannals
Implemented additional 4 assessment in other schemes
 
   
 
 

Component 4 - Market development opportunities

Implemented several market actors and value chains  studies  at the woreda and addis level

Market groups:
- n. 4 cooperatives for fresh products (ca 300 members)
- n. 2 cooperative for potato tuber seed production (ca 50 members)
- n. 1 women group under construction for agro processing (Ecopia)

Market group empowerment:
- Administrative and technical management
- Technical assistance on cultivation
- Planning production and calendars
- Meeting and visits to traders
