INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM: RISKS AND TERRITORIES
CALL FOR PAPERS
Lyon, May 17-18, 2001
UMR CNRS 5600
ENVIRONMENT - CITY - SOCIETY

Although the theme of risk is currently the subject of extensive debate both in scientific and technical circles and in the world of politics and administration, the local and/or territorial dimension of endangering phenomena, their management and perception has so far failed to attract sustained attention.
For this reason, the UMR CNRS 5600 "Environment - City -- Society" calls for the submission of papers for a symposium to be held in Lyons, on May 17 - 18, 2001. All types of risk - natural, technological or sanitary - are involved, but not so-called "social" risks (petty crime, management of deprived areas, etc.), which belong to a specific category of problems. The organisers wish to highlight the pluridisciplinary vocation of the symposium.
Papers from fields other than Geography, Environment, Urban Planning and Development (i.e. those traditional to UMR CNRS 5600) will be extremely welcome, notably from the spheres of Sociology, Ethnology, Political Science, History, Economics,
Engineering Science, Earth and Natural Sciences. Risk management professionals are also invited to put forward their point of view on these issues. Risk has been provisionally defined not as a catastrophe, but as the representation of a possible danger implying collective damage. As far as possible, emphasis will be laid on the links between risks and territories, and simple descriptions of events will not be accepted.

N.B. Participants are invited to relate their reflections to their chosen definitions of the notions of "risk", "local" and/or "territory".

MAJOR THEMES
The main topics of the symposium will be organised on a workshop basis:
1. SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE OF TERRITORIALISED RISKS
2. RISK MANAGEMENT
3. RISK PERCEPTION : TECHNICAL VS. "ORDINARY" VIEWPOINTS

Complete information regarding these themes, conference organization and submission of abstracts (Deadline: November 15, 2000) and papers (by January 15, 2001) can be found at http://www.univ-lyon3.fr/umr5600/
